My main goal: to refine the objectives for the 1st units of the year. It always takes us too long to get through the Revolution and “win the war.” In the past two years, it has taken us all the way through January to get that far through the curriculum. That means we’re tackling the Constitution & government unit in February, which is a logistical nightmare. We have a weeklong vacation in the middle of the month that interrupts the flow, and we always get at least one snow day (or even SIX!) around that time.
To get there, we must shave off a few objectives from the 1750s-1760s. I’ve already made the toughest choice: deleting the 3-week “regions of the colonies” exploration which was based on the American Nations book/hypothesis. I still love the concept and it has plenty of potential, but I never sufficiently connected it throughout the school year – it doesn’t get the payoff those three valuable weeks should deserve.
Meanwhile I'm thinking of ways to involve historical thinking (& some guest speakers?) more prominently this year. More about that tomorrow, unless I get a better idea of what to write about....
