All 15,000+ pages are scanned and available online, but you can't search for keywords like slavery. Of course these are handwritten pages, so automated text readers are useless ... they need humans to type all the text word-for-word to compile a digital version of JQA's diary. How would you do with the excerpt below? [see my transcription at the bottom]
It took me the better part of 3 hours to transcribe 4 1/2 pages from May 1st-5th of 1830, with about a dozen words that I just couldn't decipher so I marked them with [????] for an editor to replace later in the process. We were just the frontline of transcribers -- these projects go through several stages to ensure the quality of the final product. I'm just glad to be part of the process!
