Today I launched #flipblogs version 3.0 by tweeting this image:

Very soon afterward, @lauravoges reminded me via tweet that blogging does not come naturally to everybody. Dangit, of course that is true!

If you already have a blog, skip the following orange section for tips about how to be as flipping ridiculous as me...

Ways to get started with blogging:
  1. Choose a hosting site. I use Weebly which has good free options, but there are others like Blogspot. Layout design is really simple and should not at all be your top priority anyway.
  2. Write something about some stuff that happened.
  3. Repeat.
Well, maybe some commenters or tweeters will add a few steps or suggestions, but I think this pretty much covers it. Choosing a blog site is not like buying a new car. Unless this will be your second source of income, and even that will take a few months (years?) to build an audience.
Oh, one more thing: Try to pick a better blog name than I did!

General tips:
  • Avoid obvious references to your workplace, colleagues, parents, and certainly students. You have to assume that any of those people could be in your audience.
  • Political messages can be oh-so-tempting, but also avoid as much as possible. There are lots of other things you can blog about. (I bent my own rule and then deleted the post a few weeks later.)
  • That said, just go ahead and be yourself, and if that means throwing caution to the wind, well then fuck it just go ahead! (see what I did there)
  • "What will I blog about?!" --- There are so many possibilities! You tried something new today ... something old actually worked better than ever ... one student did a funny / surprising / inspiring / disturbing / thought-provoking thing ... you feel _____ about next week because _____  .... What won't you blog about?

See you on the #flipblogs!

    Who is this flipping guy?!

Andrew Swan has survived 20 full years of teaching middle school (currently grade 8 US Civics/Government in a Boston suburb). Previously he taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade English, US History, geography, and ancient history in Massachusetts and Maine.
For the past 7 years, Andrew has flipped nearly all his direct instruction to give more class time for simulations, deep discussions, analyzing primary sources, etc. ... and also to promote mastery for students at all levels.
His wonderful wife and his 2 high school-age children indulge Andrew's blogging, tweeting, & other behaviors. These include co-moderating the #sschat Twitter sessions and Facebook page.
Andrew does not always refer to himself in the third-person.
