Another feeble attempt at a decent flipping blog post

     Nothing really profound or useful to blog about now...but that's never stopped me before!

     This week I thought I would have more time to plan ahead to the next unit that has to start on Tuesday, but as usual I got bogged down by specifics and details. Of course the election results were a main factor there. For their election scrapbook project, many students had been following the Georgia governor race, Florida senator & governor races, and the Arizona senate election --- which are still undecided! I needed to keep researching and following the news for all 4 elections, while also doing some modifications on the fly (as often happens when doing a project for the first time). 
     In the end, I think the scrapbooks turned out pretty well. I need to formally assess most of them this weekend, but for some reason I'm typing this blog post instead.

​     Oh yeah, I had a bit of drama in the middle of the week:

I really appreciated the reply tweets to both messages, even though I did not respond to all of them. At one point on Wednesday I was writing a speech in my head that I would deliver to classes -- something about respecting natural rights and sticking up for others. It probably wasn't going to work, so I'm glad I abandoned that idea. Still, the issue of "being professional" with students who have done horrible things remains problematic.

Next week, after a brief hiatus from flipped-video assignments in favor of the Election Scrapbook tasks, I'm back on the wagon with one of my Top-5 favorite video lessons:

    Who is this flipping guy?!

       Andrew Swan has survived 20 full years of teaching middle school (currently grade 8 US Civics/Government in a Boston suburb). Previously he taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade English, US History, geography, and ancient history in Massachusetts and Maine. 
      For the past 7 years, Andrew has flipped nearly all his direct instruction to give more class time for simulations, deep discussions, analyzing primary sources, etc. ... and also to promote mastery for students at all levels.
      His wonderful wife and his 2 high school-age children indulge Andrew's blogging, tweeting, & other behaviors. These include co-moderating the #sschat Twitter sessions and Facebook page. 
      ​Andrew does not always refer to himself in the third-person.
